Frequently asked questions — United States Naturalization civics test
Quick answers about the tests, how uktest.com works, and how to use the site in your own language.
About your test
Facts about your test — how many questions, the pass mark, the time limit, and the official source. This is separate from how uktest.com itself works, below.
Which test do I take?+
N-400 filing date, not interview date. Before 20 October 2025: 2008. On or after: 2025. Source: https://www.uscis.gov/citizenship/find-study-materials-and-resources/study-for-the-test
What is the 2025 format?+
Oral. 20 questions from 128. Pass 12. Fail if 9 of 20 are incorrect. The officer can stop. Source: https://www.uscis.gov/citizenship-resource-center/naturalization-test-and-study-resources/2025-civics-test
Is the pass mark higher now?+
No. The pass percentage remains 60%. Source: https://www.uscis.gov/policy-manual/volume-12-part-e-chapter-2
What is the 2008 format for earlier filers?+
Up to 10 questions from 100. Pass 6. Fail at 5. The officer can stop. Study that version on USCIS, not on this 2025 practice bank.
What is the 65/20 special consideration?+
Study the 20 asterisk questions in M-1778. The officer asks 10. You need at least 6 of 10. Which version you study still follows the filing date. Language of choice applies only under that special consideration. Source: M-1778 and the Policy Manual.
Will the officer ask all 20 questions?+
No. The officer can stop as soon as you reach 12 correct, or end early after 9 incorrect. Source: https://www.uscis.gov/citizenship-resource-center/naturalization-test-and-study-resources/2025-civics-test
Do civics answers change after elections?+
Check the USCIS updates page before your interview — office-holder answers can change. Source: https://www.uscis.gov/citizenship/find-study-materials-and-resources/check-for-test-updates
What English exemptions exist besides 65/20?+
50/20 and 55/15 also exempt you from the English test (civics is still required, with an interpreter). Form N-648 covers a medical disability exception. Source: https://www.uscis.gov/citizenship/exceptions-and-accommodations
Does passing civics mean USCIS approves my N-400?+
No. Civics is one part of the interview. This is not immigration advice — see USCIS for the full N-400 process. Source: https://www.uscis.gov/citizenship/learn-about-citizenship/the-naturalization-interview-and-test
Where are the official 128 questions?+
USCIS publishes them as a PDF, M-1778. We link it and do not host a copy. Source: https://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/files/document/questions-and-answers/2025-Civics-Test-128-Questions-and-Answers.pdf
About the tests
Which tests does uktest.com cover?+
This FAQ page covers uktest.com's practice and mock tests for the United States Naturalization civics test. uktest.com also has practice for several other citizenship and civics tests — see the footer or the test switcher in the header to explore them.
Is this the official test, or affiliated with the government?+
No. uktest.com is an independent, free study aid for the United States Naturalization civics test. It is not affiliated with USCIS, and it is not a substitute for official guidance. Always check the official government website for the real exam rules.
What language are the test questions in?+
It depends on the test: UK, US and Australia test questions stay in English, matching those real exams. Germany's Einbürgerungstest is in German and France's examen civique is in French, also matching their real exams. Spain's CCSE is in Spanish. For Canada, IRCC lets you sit the knowledge test in English or French, so you can choose EN or FR next to 🇨🇦 CA. This is separate from the website's interface language, which follows your own choice.
Will uktest.com guarantee I pass?+
No. Passing here does not guarantee a pass on the official test — see our Terms.
Are these the real exam questions?+
No. Practice questions are written from the official study material, not the confidential live exam paper. Each test's official source is linked above.
How the website works
What is Practice mode?+
Practice mode is untimed. As soon as you pick an answer you see whether it was correct and read an explanation, then move to the next question at your own pace.
What is a Mock test?+
A mock test simulates the real exam: it can be timed, you move through questions with Back and Next, and you only see your full results — score, pass/fail and explanations — at the end.
What are Weak areas?+
Weak areas practice focuses on the chapters you have scored lowest on. Take a mock test first so the site has enough answers to work out which topics to focus on; you'll need to be logged in to use this.
What does the hint (peek) button do?+
During practice, the hint button shows you relevant study text from the official material so you can find the answer yourself. Using it is helpful for learning, but that question is then counted as missed, even if you go on to answer it correctly.
I think a question is wrong — what should I do?+
Use the Challenge button under that question to flag it for review, with a short note if you like. Our team checks challenged questions; please don't use the general contact form for this.
How is my progress tracked?+
Every finished attempt is saved. Guests keep a copy on their own device (browser storage). If you are logged in, your results are also saved to your account, and your progress by chapter is shown on the Progress page.
Do you have an app, or does it work offline?+
No app yet, and no offline mode. uktest.com works in any mobile or desktop browser.
Accounts and saving progress
Do I need an account to use the site?+
No. You can take practice and mock tests as a guest, with no sign-up required. An account is only needed for Weak areas practice, and to keep your progress saved across devices.
What happens to my results if I'm not logged in?+
They are saved on your device only (the last 20 attempts), so they won't follow you to another browser or device, and could be lost if you clear your browser data.
How do I see my progress over time?+
Log in, then open the Progress page from the menu. It shows your status per chapter, so you can see which topics still need work.
Can I delete my data?+
Yes. Contact us and we will remove it — see our Privacy page.
Using the website in your own language
How do I change the website language?+
Use the language menu at the top of every page. The change applies immediately and stays on the same page you were viewing.
If I change the website language, does that change the test questions too?+
No. Changing the interface language only translates menus, buttons and help text. Each test's questions stay in that test's own exam language: English for UK, US and Australia; German for the Einbürgerungstest; French for the examen civique; Spanish for the CCSE. For Canada, use the separate EN / FR toggle next to 🇨🇦 CA to choose the language of the test itself.
